Summer of Maps is a 12-week program organized by Azavea that matches talented fellows with nonprofits to complete challenging spatial analysis projects.
What will my organization receive? Nonprofit organizations who submit winning project ideas will work closely with a fellow and Azavea throughout the summer and receive a completed analysis project, at no cost to the organization. Projects answer challenging data and spatial analysis questions and result in a series of data, maps, and visualizations.
What makes a good application? We're looking for nonprofit organizations with spatial analysis and geographic visualization needs to submit their project ideas. Projects can have a large range of topics but should be focused on data analysis and visualization, rather than the creation of software or interactive sites. Check out past projects here and review our nonprofit guidelines to help you get started.
Check out last year's shortlist to get an idea of what makes a great application. We're looking for projects with:
a compelling and challenging spatial analysis problem
data to support the work
a clear idea of how the work will be used and what deliverables would be most useful
When will you hear from us? The application closes on Sunday, February 2nd. You should expect to hear whether you've been selected for the shortlist or not around March 1st. If you made the shortlist, you should expect to hear your status in late March once we've completed the student hiring process.
